Born in Texas, Christian received a BFA from the University of Texas in Austin. Christian's apprenticeship with the late sculptor Luis Jimenez provided the knowledge and understanding involved in creating monumental works. It was after moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid 1990s that he began producing his own works of similar size inspired largely by the grand scale of industry associated with naval ship yards throughout the Bay Area. Christian's work is inspired by the genius of nature and often characterized by its incorporation of human participation. His works have traveled around the globe with permanent private and public installations across North America. Christian's studio is in Berkeley, California.
Michael Christian has been on the VFSF curatorial radar for some time. We just have not found the right project for his talents.
It was serendipitous that when Michael was invited to participate in the exhibition, the sculpture that he had available was Celestial Body, a piece that he exhibited at Burning Man in 2003.
