Mudgett learned to work with metal as a pipefitter. In 1986 he started his own metal fabricating business. Friends encouraged him to apply his skills to sculpture and he now sculpts full time. Mudgett is known for creating large outdoor abstract sculptures, steel and stone tables and indoor pieces. He has exhibited regularly at the Cloverdale Sculpture Show where he has won best in show. He currently has public works at the Elk Grove Police Department, Redding City Hall and in Puyallup, Washington. He has twice won the Jurors Award at the California State Fair.
As with the majority of my works, the shapes of the materials at hand inspire the pieces. Eroded Spheres were originally inspired by a pile of rebar rings. Turning the rings into spheres seemed like the most natural thing to do. This three piece ensemble titled Eclipse rose from 390 pieces that have been connected at 640 joints.
Whether you’re looking through the Hubble telescope or an electron microscope, you can’t escape the fact that spheres dominate our universe. We are built of spheres, as is everything we see touch and feel. In the time it takes to read this statement millions of them will have been pulled from this piece in their quest to rejoin the collective that we call earth.
